A large concert hall with a full audience, spotlights illuminating a stage with seated performers and screens displaying images.

One of our major realizations when starting PACT! was that spearheading a movement of standing up to hate is not a solo show.  Since our very first meeting, we understood that if we really wanted to make hate socially unacceptable, we’d have to open up the tent and bring more people–particularly young, smart, energetic ones–to the table inside it.

This is why we’ve launched our first activation in conjunction with our friends (and we use that term literally and lovingly) at One Young World.

Together, we have put together Break The Hate, a subversive challenge of radical goodness.  In simple terms, it’s a worldwide outreach, open to young leaders (age 18 - 35) who are tackling hate in their communities or countries. As part of the PACT! pillar of “Venture Philanthropy,” the Break The Hatechallenge is where we take out our binoculars and seek entrepreneurs and projects to discover and amplify.

You can find out more–perhaps even join us!–by clicking here or here.

What’s different and very PACT! about Break The Hate is the sense of freedom and liberty we want applicants to feel.  This is no stodgy competition with hundreds of rules; we actually encourage applicants to be fun and wild and to, and we quote: “Pull out all stops! Stand out from the others! Shout! Dance! Apply in rhyme or song! Make this memorable any way you can!” (Which is perhaps the most exclamation points ever used in a leadership challenge application form.)

As our official documentation says: “We’re looking for leaders who make you sit up, lean in, and pay attention — the kind who challenge the status quo not just with words, but with bold, boundary-breaking creativity.”

Break The Hate pays off in Munich in early November, when the three winners will be flown there to present their passion projects to leaders from over 190 countries.

Actually, we stand corrected.  If things really work out, the Break The Hate Challenge can pay off all over the world, and for a long, long time.
